Deane Barker

Content Management Practice Director

Content modeling czar and content management leader, interested in the current and future of information management. Also: editor at Gadgetopia.

What that job title means

I manage both the Content Management and Content Strategy practices at Blend, which means I plan and consult on both content management implementations (how your content is managed and controlled) and content strategy (what content you need to manage or control).

Relevant background and expertise

I’ve been working on the Web practically since it was born – since, like, 1996 or something. I was an intranet manager for a number of years, and have been building sites of various depths ever since.

Education and certifications

Bachelors in Political Science from Augustana College. (I had aspirations of being a lawyer once.)  I'm both an EPiServer Certified Developer and EPiServer MVP.  I have handful of other vendor certifications as well.

Essential professional-related books

I read a ridiculous amount, so it becomes tough to pick.  Peter Morville and Louis Rosenfeld's Polar Bear Book (Information Architecture for the World Wide Web) is seminal.  I really enjoyed Bob Boiko's Laughing at the CIO too.  For usability, The Inmates are Running the Asylum can't be beat.

Other organizations

I’m a member of CM Professionals and the IA Institute.

Favorite movie

Probably Groundhog Day, if I had to pick just one. (Though, I just saw It's a Wonderful Life last year for the first time and loved it.)

The trend that will transform the Web within the next 5 years

Multi-channel publishing. A web page in a browser will soon become just one channel of many, rather than the primary channel. Content will exist a “pure” form, and be “cast” into a dozen different channels, from Twitter to Facebook to SMS.  We're already seeing this happen -- the real challenge is going to be managing it in an integrated, intelligent way.

Childhood aspiration

An architect. I love buildings, but I think I just liked to say the word “architect.” It sounded awesome.

Guilty pleasure

I'll drop everything to watch an episode of Friends.
